Everyone knows that the healthiest way to maintain your weight is through diet and exercise. But when stubborn fat pockets do not respond to diet and exercise, a patient may want to consider liposuction. At his plastic surgery center in Littleton, Colorado, board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Zwiebel offers ultrasonic assisted liposuction to his patients. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction is very similar to tumescent liposuction and uses some of the same techniques. Considered the safest type of liposuction available, ultrasonic assisted liposuction liquefies fat through the use of ultrasonic energy, allowing for large amounts of fat removal with little blood loss. During this procedure of liposuction, Denver plastic surgeon Dr. Zwiebel will inject fluid into the treatment area. This causes the fat to harden and clump together, making it easier to remove. Next, Dr. Zwiebel will insert a titanium probe emitting ultrasonic energy into the area. This energy, when applied to the fat cells, will break the cell walls and cause the fat to flow out. Essentially, it “liquefies” the fatty pockets. Finally, Dr. Zwiebel will use a suction vacuum to remove the fat. Small sutures will be used to close the incisions.

The procedure is performed under IV sedation, and patients will return home wearing a compression garment, a body girdle, that will allow for healing. The patient will wear the garment for the next several weeks. Most of Dr. Zwiebel’s patients in Littleton and the Denver area resume their daily activities after the first week of recovery, but it is important to avoid strenuous activities for the first six weeks of recovery. Initial discomfort is easily controlled by oral medications.
